An appreciation of the works of God
The Psalmist David sought to meditate on the works of God. The works of God include His protection of His people, the provision for their needs and His presence in leading them. David described these works as mighty, glorious, wondrous and awesome (Psalm 145:4–6). As he came to know these works better, David saw and appreciated God for who He is.
The works of God reveal His nature. But our problem is that when God does a work for us, we are only appreciative of what He has done. We do not go far enough in our appreciation of God…to see Him for who He is. The works of God reflect His Person.
Remembering the Person of God
“They shall utter the memory of Your great goodness,” (Psalm 145:7)
- The challenge is for us to remember who God is.
- We ought not to forget the Person of God and what He is like.
- David always remembered God, even when he faced troubles such as enemies.
- He treasured and held on to God, and all that He is.
- Let us be challenged to share our memories of God amid our difficulties.
The attributes of God
The works of God reveal His different attributes. Here are some that David highlighted.
1. His goodness
“They shall utter the memory of Your great goodness,” (Psalm 145:7)
- The great works of God reflect the great goodness of God.
- His goodness is given to all…no matter who we are (Psalm 145:9).
2. His righteousness
“And shall sing of Your righteousness.” (Psalm 145:7)
- Whatever God does, His righteousness is evident.
- God is characterised by righteousness, as there is nothing evil about Him and His works.
3. His graciousness
“The Lord is gracious and full of compassion, slow to anger and great in mercy.” (Psalm 145:8)
- Another attribute is God’s graciousness, as seen in how He does things for His people.
- He shows His divine favour and kindness in all He does.
4. His compassion
- This attribute reveals the heart of God as He relates to His people.
- This is closely related to how He would pity them as a father pities his son (Psalm 103:13).
5. His slowness to anger
- God does not deal with us immediately or impulsively.
- He shows great patience and longsuffering in being slow to anger.
6. His mercies
- God’s mercies are truly great and abundant (Psalm 103:11).
- His mercies are tender, as revealed in all His works (Psalm 145:9).
Extoling God for who He is
As we take time to appreciate the works of God in our lives, let us remember and treasure God for who He is. Let us praise and extol the Lord for His many wonderful and amazing attributes.
