Extolling the Lord

The Psalmist David made the worship of God part and parcel of his life. Not only did he seek to praise the Lord, but he also sought to extol Him, “I will extol You, my God, O King; and I will bless Your name forever and ever” (Psalm 145:1). What does it mean to extol the Lord? Extolling means giving God the highest praise and honour. It is to praise Him with all our heart, mind and spirit. All that is within us would be channelled into extolling Him. It cannot be done perfunctorily or mechanically. There ought to be a great sense of strength and determination to extol the Lord each day, “Every day I will bless You, and I will praise Your name forever and ever” (Psalm 145:2). Let us be challenged to learn from the example of David in how he extolled the Lord always.

The profundity of God’s greatness

“Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; and His greatness is unsearchable.” (Psalm 145:3)

  1. God’s greatness is a reference to His majesty, power and glory.
  2. It has to do with who God is and what He has done in all His works.
  3. David wrote to describe God’s greatness as unsearchable.
  4. Can we fully understand the greatness of God? The answer is a definite “No!”
  5. His greatness is so profound that man’s finite mind cannot comprehend it fully.
  6. It is past finding out.
  7. We cannot but stand in awe of the profundity of God’s greatness.

The display of God’s greatness

The greatness of God can be seen and discovered. David highlights two ways in which God’s greatness is seen.

1. The Person of God

  1. The greatness of God is seen in who He is.
  2. He is a great and awesome God.
  3. He is the only true God and there is no other like Him (Psalm 145:1).
  4. God is our glorious King who is sovereign over all peoples and nations (Psalm 145:1).
  5. He is the Lord God whose name is above all other names (Psalm 145:1,3).
  6. The Person of God truly displays His profound greatness.

2. The works of God

“One generation shall praise Your works to another, and shall declare Your mighty acts.” (Psalm 145:4)

  1. The works of God are everlasting. From one generation to another, they will see and praise His eternal works.
  2. His works reflect great power, as seen in His mighty acts.
  3. God’s works display great glory. His wondrous works reflect the glorious splendour of His majesty (Psalm 145:5).
  4. His awesome acts cause us to stand in awe and wonder (Psalm 145:6).
  5. These are the profound works of God that we should reflect on in humility.

Extolling the greatness of God

Let us be challenged to see and appreciate God’s profound greatness. Let us be challenged to extol the Lord and to bless His great name always.
