A Time To Give Thanks

Thank God for Singapore

As we celebrate our 61st National Day this Sunday, there is much for us to be thankful to God for (1 Timothy 2:1). We do not want to take for granted what we have in view of the many difficulties and needs that other nations are facing. Many are suffering due to corrupt governments, poor infrastructures, inadequate essential services and dwindling economies. While we are concerned for these nations, we cannot help but be thankful for what we have. There is no reason for us to complain about our country in comparison with these nations. The nation of Israel kept complaining against the Lord concerning their physical needs and they ended up sinning against the Lord (Exodus 16:2,8). God has blessed our country richly in so many ways that we ought to be grateful and to give thanks to Him.

What we can be thankful for

1. A wise and clean government

  1. This was the vision of our founding fathers many decades ago.
  2. Since our independence, our government has sought to make wise and sound decisions which made all the difference to the development and growth of our country.
  3. The values solidified in the earlier years and beyond have been foundational principles for the governance and building of Singapore.
  4. They were necessary to develop Singapore into what it is today.
  5. Let us continue to pray for our rulers that they will remain wise and incorruptible (1 Timothy 2:1–2).

2. A good health system

  1. We thank God for the good health system that has been provided for us.
  2. Everyone will be provided with the necessary health care according to our needs.
  3. Personally, I am a beneficiary of our health care system when I experienced a heart issue.
  4. I am grateful for the medical support that helped address this issue.
  5. Yet, there are many nations where there is little or no health care.
  6. Let us be thankful for what we have been provided with.

3. A harmonious society

  1. There are many nations where their citizens are deeply divided.
  2. Some are even facing civil war and are fighting each other.
  3. We thank God for the harmony that we have preserved despite being a multicultural society.
  4. But we recognise that this unity can be easily disrupted and broken.
  5. Let us continue to pray for our nation to remain as one nation…one people.

4. A prospering nation

  1. We thank God for prospering our nation over all these years.
  2. There were past crises that could have derailed our economy.
  3. But we managed to overcome them and continued to thrive as a nation.
  4. Let us pray for our country to persist in growing and prospering from strength to strength.

5. A special home

Each time I return from an overseas trip, I return with a greater appreciation of our nation. This is indeed our home and nation…where I was born, where my citizenship lies and where my allegiance will remain. Let us always be grateful for what we have been so greatly blessed with as a nation. Let us seek to do our part in prayer for the continued development of our country. Wishing all a Blessed and Happy National Day!
