Appreciating our profound God
As we look forward to celebrating Bethany’s 50+3 Anniversary, let us remember what God has done in our midst. We began as a church with only 25 people. There were many struggles and difficulties along the way. Yet, God was faithful in His keeping and in Bethany’s development. Today, the Lord has established Bethany to what it is. We have seen God’s great work in Bethany, which reflects who God is. He is a truly profound God whom we want to appreciate and give glory to. What do we want to focus on as we consider God’s hand in Bethany? The Apostle Paul’s prayer gives us perspective on how we can appreciate the profundity of God.
The profundity of God
1. The overflowing capacity of God
“Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly…” (Ephesians 3:20)
- Let us appreciate how Paul sought to describe the capacity of God.
- The word “exceedingly” means “overflowing”.
- He wrote that God has the capacity not only to do things abundantly.
- God also has the capacity to do what is over and beyond abundance…it is truly overflowing.
- Let us stand amazed at the overflowing capacity of God.
2. Going beyond human reasoning
“Above all that we ask or think,” (Ephesians 3:20)
- Can we fully understand what God can do? The answer is “No!”
- We tend to have a certain perspective as to what we should consider and pray for.
- But over the years, we have seen God doing a work in Bethany that is beyond what we have prayed or ever thought about.
- This is something that Pastor often shared: when he first began Bethany, he never thought that Bethany would be what it is today.
- But God does things for us far beyond what we could ask or think…it goes beyond human reasoning.
- There is no limit as to what God can do for us.
3. The dynamic power of God
“According to the power that works in us,” (Ephesians 3:20)
- This refers to the dynamic power of God.
- He is an omnipotent God.
- He is all-powerful…which is something most profound.
- Yet, God seeks to work this power in our lives, both as individuals and as a church.
- Bethany has grown into a thriving, fruitful church because of God’s power at work in our lives.
4. Giving glory to God
“To Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.” (Ephesians 3:21)
As we consider the profundity of God in His works, we ought to give Him the praise and glory that He rightly deserves. Bethany is what it is as a church because of the Lord Jesus. We have every reason to give God glory for what Christ has done for us. Our praise and glory are not meant only for the occasion of our anniversary but are also to be offered always, from one generation to another. Let us be challenged to give glory to our profound and glorious Lord.
