Understanding the concept of being reconciled
The theme for this year’s Youth Conference was “Reconciled to God”. This theme was most relevant for our young people to study, as we considered whether we are truly reconciled to God. Many of us tend to assume that we are reconciled to God but in reality, we may not be. This concept had to be understood in depth to gain a complete picture rather than a shallow, incomplete one. The Apostle Paul sought to present God’s whole plan of reconciliation in his epistles. There are two parts to this idea of reconciliation. The first part concerns the individual while the second concerns the church.
Reconciliation I
“For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.” (Romans 5:10)
- Paul was reflecting on the past when he was outside of God.
- He was a sinner and was ungodly.
- He was an enemy of God.
- He was estranged from God…far away from Him as a Jew.
- But through the death of the Lord Jesus, Paul was reconciled to God.
- Through the shedding of His blood, the Lord Jesus brought about justification.
- Paul was saved from the wrath of God (Romans 5:9).
- Reconciliation is not just about salvation.
- Reconciliation also involves repairing our relationship with God.
- Through the life of the Lord, we will see our lives being saved further.
- Through God’s love, grace and mercy, our relationship with Him can be repaired.
- There will come joy in having a closer, deeper relationship with our Father (Romans 5:11).
Reconciliation II
“And that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross, thereby putting to death the enmity.” (Ephesians 2:16)
- This second reconciliation involves God’s plan on a global scale.
- It involved the reconciliation of the Jews and the Gentiles.
- There was a great gulf between them due to cultural, racial and religious differences.
- Through the death of the Lord Jesus on the cross, He reconciled them both to God.
- He broke down the middle wall of separation and became their peace (Ephesians 2:14,15).
- The Lord abolished the enmity between them and made them into a new man…one body.
- The church of Christ
- This is God’s plan for forming the church on a global scale.
- It is not just a matter of the reconciliation of the individual.
- God’s plan of reconciliation includes all men, no matter the race or nation, to be one body.
- We thank God for the Lord Jesus, who made this possible through His life and death.
A community of faith
Through God’s whole plan of reconciliation, we become fellow citizens with the saints and members of His household (Ephesians 2:19). With Christ as our chief cornerstone, we are being fitted together and are growing to become the holy temple of God (Ephesians 2:20,21). As a community of faith, we are seeing more and more members being fitted into our church. Over the next three Sundays, we will see more people baptised, reaffirmed or transferred. We thank God that more are being reconciled to Him and to the church. Let us be challenged also to be reconciled to God as we understand His full plan of reconciliation this Christmas.
