Walk As Children Of Light

Walking with God

The Apostle Paul challenged the Ephesian church to learn how to walk with God. As dear children, they were meant to be imitators of God (Ephesians 5:1). God was their Father and they were to follow Him in all His ways. A walk is a reference to our lifestyle…how we ought to conduct ourselves. We are not meant to live according to our own desires and ways. The Lord will teach us how to live and walk in this world. One aspect of this walk concerns light. We are called to walk in the light. As God is light, we should walk in His light. But there is always the danger of being influenced by darkness again. Paul sought to help us remember the past darkness that we were once in.

The darkness of the past

“For you were once darkness,” (Ephesians 5:8)

  1. We were all once walking in darkness due to the influence of sin, the world and Satan.
  2. We engaged in the unfruitful works of darkness…all futile and useless (Ephesians 5:11).
  3. These included secret acts that we would be too ashamed to speak of (Ephesians 5:12).
  4. We were spiritually dead and asleep in darkness (Ephesians 5:14).
  5. This darkness was most pervasive and its influence was great.
  6. The challenge is for us not to be influenced or to have any fellowship with such darkness again.
  7. Let us not walk in darkness anymore, as we walk with the Lord.

The light of the present

“But now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light.” (Ephesians 5:8)

  1. Paul used the word “now” to emphasise our present state.
  2. Our present consciousness of our state should be that we are light in the Lord.
  3. The challenge is for us to walk as children of light.
    1. If we are imitating God, who is light, then we would be children of light.
    2. Our lifestyle would manifest the kind of conduct that is full of light.
  4. We would be able to bear the fruits of the Spirit (Ephesians 5:9).
    1. The Spirit of God would work in our lives and manifest light in the form of fruits.
    2. Our life would bear fruits such as goodness, righteousness and truth.
    3. The challenge is to be a tree that bears much fruit.
  5. Being in the light, we would know what is acceptable to the Lord (Ephesians 5:10).
    1. The light will expose and manifest the things of darkness.
    2. We would guard against the unfruitful works of darkness.

The Lord’s special call

“Therefore He says: “Awake, you who sleep, arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light.”” (Ephesians 5:14)

Paul concluded with a special call from the Lord. It is a call for those who are spiritually asleep and dead. If we have allowed darkness to influence us, we would be spiritually asleep and dead. The Lord’s call is given for us to awake and walk in the light. We are to arise from the dead and come alive. The Lord Jesus Christ will give us the light that we need to become spiritually alive. We thank God for the Lord Jesus, who came down to this earth to bring light to the world. Let us be challenged to ensure that we are walking no longer in darkness but in the light of our Father as His children. Let us be challenged to be spiritually alive to bear fruits of the Spirit and manifest works of light this Christmas.
