Day 320 – Psalm 39

“I was mute, I did not open my mouth…” Psalm 39:9a

PRAYERFUL REFLECTION

David took time to ponder his decision to keep silent in the presence of the wicked in prayer. In prayerful reflection he came to an important understanding.

“I was mute, I did not open my mouth,
Because it was You who did it.
Remove Your plague from me;
I am consumed by the blow of Your hand.”
Psalm 39:9

1. “I was mute, I did not open my mouth”

a) This was a reflective thought.
b) David recounted his earlier decision to keep silent (Psalm 39:1).

2. “Because it was You who did it”

a) David realized that God had allowed him to follow through with his determination, even though it was ill-conceived.
b) He then found that he did not have God’s blessing on his decision, for he had not sought the Lord’s mind on the matter in the first instance.

3. “Your plague”

a) David felt as if he had suffered a plague sent by God.
b) He had not realized that his wrong decision could cause such severe consequences.

4. “I am consumed by the blow of Your hand”

a) The “plague” was now described “a blow”.
b) This Divine act of God against David nearly consumed him.

5. “Remove Your plague”

a) David knew that he had to plead to God to remove this “plague”.
b) The Lord must bring about a healing from this “blow” or David would be utterly consumed.
