The Book of Psalms

BLESSED IS THE MAN

The Book of Psalms is arguably one of the most-read portions of the Bible. It is right that our Daily Devotions would see us study this dearly loved Book of Psalms. The title of this new series of Daily Devotions is taken from the opening words of the very first Psalm.

“Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly,
Nor stands in the path of sinners,
Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;
But his delight is in the law of the LORD,
And in His law he meditates day and night.”
Psalm 1:1-2

The theme of “blessing” is pursued most diligently and carefully in the Book of Psalms. Though a number of authors contributed to the Book of Psalms, it would not be wrong to suggest that all are in agreement that life is at its zenith when the blessings of God are graciously outpoured and joyously received!

DIVISION OF THE BOOK OF PSALMS

Bible scholars note that the Book of Psalms may be divided into five segments.

Book One Psalms 1-41

Book Two Psalms 42-72

Book Three Psalms 73-89

Book Four Psalms 90-106

Book Five Psalm 107-150

These Divisions help us appreciate the following things about the Book of Psalms:-

1. We are to appreciate that there is a variety of subjects or themes dealt with in each segment.

2. We are challenged to study the Book of Psalms with great attention and diligence in order to appreciate the different spiritual insights found in individual psalms.

3. We are moved to ponder how we ought to apply the practical wisdom that the Book of Psalms offers to all who devote time to meditate on the Scriptures.

Let us humbly borrow the words of the Psalmist as we commence our study of the Book of Psalms.

“Open my eyes that I may see wondrous things
from Your law.”
Psalm 119:18
