“Make Your face shine upon Your servant, and teach me Your statutes.” Psalm 119:135

HEARTFELT PRAYERS

The reading of the Scriptures must always be accompanied by prayer. The psalmist shares how he prayed to the Lord even as he read the Scripture avidly.

1. Praying for mercy (Psalm 119:132a)

a) The psalmist does not take his close relationship with God for granted.
b) No matter how close he may be to the Lord he must ever pray for mercy.
c) He maintains proper humility of spirit as a good servant of the Lord.

2. “As Your custom is toward those who love Your name” (Psalm 119:132b)

a) The psalmist has proven himself to be a good student of God’s word.
b) He notes how God has always shown mercy to those who love His name.
c) This was God’s “custom”. This he draws special encouragement to pray for mercy.

3. “Make Your face shine upon Your servant” (Psalm 119:135a)

The expressions sought for include the following:

a) That God would direct his footsteps according to His word (Psalm 119:133a).
b) That God would not let iniquity prevail and have dominion over him (Psalm 119:133b).
c) That God would redeem him in times of oppression (Psalm 119:134a).
d) That God would continue to teach him His statutes (Psalm 119:135b).

APPROPRIATE RESPONSES

The psalmist knew that he would need to consider making appropriate response to God’s leading and blessing in his life. The following appropriate responses may be highlighted:-

1. There must be a strong desire to keep His Word (Psalm 119:129b, 134b).

2. There must be a very special heart that is tender and sensitive.

a) Deep sadness is felt when people do not keep God’s laws.
b) Conversely, there must be great determination to keep God’s laws.
