“Your testimonies are wonderful; therefore my soul keeps them.” Psalm 119:129

BEARING EFFECTIVE TESTIMONY

The psalmist bears effective testimony of his experience with the Word of God in this segment (Psalm 119:129-136). The true and faithful servant of God does not only speak of knowledge of God’s word, he is able to bear good testimony of his personal experience reading the Scriptures.

1. God’s testimonies are simply wonderful (Psalm 119:129a).

2. The Word of God gives vital light (Psalm 119:130a).

a) At the onset of reading God’s word, light is given (Psalm 119:130a).
b) Even the simple may gain good understanding through his reading of God’s word (Psalm 119:130b).

THE PERSONAL EXAMPLE OF THE PSALMIST

How should the Word of God be read for it to become effective? Let us ponder the example of the psalmist in the following text.

“I opened my mouth and panted,
For I longed for Your commandments.”
Psalm 119:131

1. “I opened my mouth”

a) This is a special way of describing how the psalmist approached the reading of God’s word.
b) A literal-physical expression is chosen.
c) He literally opens his mouth to partake of the Lord’s word (Ezekiel 3:1-3).

2. “And panted”

a) The imagery changes a little.
b) We are reminded of a deer panting to have his thirst quenched (Psalm 42:1-2; Psalm 63:1).
c) There is a deep soul-thirst that drives the psalmist to seek quenching through the reading of the Scriptures.

3. “For I longed for Your commandments”

a) Longing for the Lord’s word provides tremendous impetus.
b) The psalmist does not casually approach the reading of the Lord’s word.
c) He reads the Scripture as a famished person approaches food and drink.
