“Your Will Be Done”

The prayer for God’s will to be done

One part of the Lord’s Prayer that the Lord Jesus taught concerns the will of God, “Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” (Matt 6:10) It is a prayer to understand the will of God and that it may be fulfilled. In heaven, the angels obey the will of God fully. Our prayer should be that we will seek to do the same on this earth.

The Lord Jesus sets for us the greatest example of how to fulfil the will of God completely (Heb 10:7). We learnt during Maundy Thursday how the Lord Jesus sought to practise what He had taught, “O My Father, if this cup cannot pass away from Me unless I drink it, Your will be done.” (Matt 26:42) Through intense struggles in prayer, the Lord Jesus was able to submit His will to the will of God. He became fully compliant with God’s will.

This prayer concerning the will of God is something that I pray for each day. On the one hand, I pray that I would learn to follow the Lord’s Word as His will. On the other hand, I am also praying to understand and accept the difficulties in my life and the lives of others as God’s will too.

A time when God’s will was difficult to fulfil

Today is my father’s birthday. It was exactly five months ago that my father passed away suddenly. As I remember my dad and his passing, I thought I’d share with you the struggle that my family had in understanding God’s will for my dad when he suffered the bleeding in his brain.

I recognise that every family who is faced with such a dire situation is different. The family would have to understand for themselves what is God’s will for their loved one. For me, I would like to share how in understanding God’s will for my dad, we could find comfort and hope in God.

The doctors informed us that my dad had massive bleeding in his brain. If we had decided for the doctors to operate, my dad might have a longer life span but he would most likely be a vegetable. The other option was to let him be, and he would slowly pass away.

We consulted with Pastor Charles and one of our church doctors. Collectively, we agreed that doing the operation would not be wise. At the same time, our comfort and hope were that my dad knows the Lord and he would be with Him when he passes away.

“Your will be done”

It was one of the hardest decisions that we had to make as a family. But we recognise that this was God’s will for my dad and us as we learnt to let go. Learning to pray for God’s will to be done was my way of submitting to His will and being assured that this was His good, acceptable and perfect will.

The hope of our salvation in Christ brought much comfort…to know that my father would be with Him in heaven’s glory. In going through that difficult time, my appreciation of the salvation of Christ deepened greatly. Thank God that it was His will for Christ to give us this salvation and for His Holy Spirit to be our seal and guarantee. Let us be challenged to continue to pray and trust for the Lord’s will to be done in our lives.
