The Will Of God And Making Decisions

Seeking the will of God in making decisions

At different points in our life, we would find ourselves at a crossroad, where we would have to make a decision that concerns our future. It could be about our work or a family matter. All of us will have to make vital decisions that will impact our lives and those around us.

I thought I’d share with you some of the things that have helped me better understand the Lord’s will in making those decisions.

1. Scriptures

The Scriptures help us to determine what the will of God is for us as it did for the Lord Jesus (Heb 10:7). The Word should be regarded as the foundation for us to make our decisions (Matt 7:24). Any decision that we make that is contrary to the Word of God would not be in accordance with the will of the Lord.

2. Prayer

“Show me Your ways, O Lord; teach me Your paths. Lead me in Your truth and teach me,” (Ps 25:4-5)

We involve God in our decision-making when we pray to Him. One prayer that I like to make is to ask the Lord to show me His ways. We should focus on the Lord’s ways rather than our ways. When the Lord reveals His path and His leading to us, we would know that this is the Lord’s will. Sometimes, the Lord does not show us the way immediately. It is wise for us to wait on the Lord rather than to make a rash decision.

3. Wisdom and counsel

We recognise that we need wisdom to determine the will of the Lord. It matters how much wisdom we have attained for ourselves. With greater wisdom, we would be able to apply that wisdom in our decision-making. It is the Lord who gives us wisdom and counsel to help us plan, “There are many plans in a man’s heart, nevertheless the Lord’s counsel—that will stand.” (Proverbs 19:21) Let us learn to apply the Lord’s wisdom and counsel in making our decisions and plans.

4. Pastoral support

We thank God for pastoral help in guiding us to make decisions in life. I thank God for Pastor Charles’ insights in guiding me to make decisions that have been proven to be wise and seen as the will of the Lord. Let us learn to turn to such counsellors to give us good counsel in our decision-making (Prov 15:22).

5. Good and clear understanding

In making a good decision, it is wise to have a good and clear understanding of all that we need to consider. For instance, we may be considering a move from one job to another. We can better evaluate things when we have a good and clear understanding of our present job situation and the prospective job. With a more precise understanding, we would be in a better position to apply the four above things…to make a good decision that is according to the Lord’s will.

These are some things that have been helping me in my decision-making. Let us be challenged to make decisions that are according to the will of the Lord.
