Facing the forces of darkness

The spiritual battle between light and darkness is truly great. The battle is not fought only at the individual level, but also between the forces of light and the forces of darkness. Satan’s army is a great and formidable enemy. The Apostle Paul provided insights concerning them. There are four levels of evil forces that we need to war against, “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.” (Ephesians 6:12) These are dark, wicked and powerful forces. All of us need to put on the whole armour of God to do battle.

Putting on the whole armour of God

“Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” (Ephesians 6:11)

1. God’s plan for us to overcome the evil forces
   1. This is the only way to do battle with the forces of darkness.
   2. Each one of us needs to put on the whole armour of God to defend the church.
2. The need to be strong in the Lord…“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.” (Ephesians 6:10)
   1. Much strength is needed to carry the armour of God and do battle.
   2. Only the power of His might can energise us to use the armour to defend ourselves.

Standing clad in the whole armour of God

1. Belt of truth (Ephesians 6:14)
   1. This is the first piece that we need to gird our waist with…truth.
   2. We stand with truth from God’s Word that will defend us against all things false.
2. Breastplate of righteousness (Ephesians 6:14)
   1. We also must protect ourselves with a life of righteousness that is imputed and lived out.
   2. Our righteousness will stand against all the unrighteous ways of the evil one.
3. Feet shod with gospel of peace (Ephesians 6:15)
   1. It is the message of the gospel of peace that has given us peace with God and others.
   2. We are committed to sharing this gospel wherever we go…to overcome fear and anxiety.
4. Shield of faith (Ephesians 6:16)
   1. The challenge is also to develop a strong faith that cannot be shaken by the wiles of Satan.
   2. No matter what kind of suffering Satan will hurl at us, we must stand strong in faith.
5. Helmet of salvation…“And take the helmet of salvation,” (Ephesians 6:17)
   1. We will need the helmet of salvation to protect our minds.
   2. The assurance of the Lord’s salvation will protect us from dark accusations and doubts.
6. Sword of the Spirit…“And the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;” (Ephesians 6:17)
   1. The challenge is to know the Word of God deeply and well enough to wield it as a sword.
   2. The Holy Spirit will help us battle against false teachings and ways through the Scriptures.

The armour of light

Paul also described this armour as the armour of light (Romans 13:12). Each of us is meant to be enlisted as a soldier of light. We are part of an army of light that must stand and defend ourselves against Satan’s army of darkness. Let us answer the rallying call to put on the whole armour of God and to stand together as one to defend the church against all wicked forces of the evil one.
