The wisdom to wait

Waiting can be a difficult challenge. Often, we prefer things to be done immediately and would rather not wait. We may become impatient and be more inclined to carry out our plans rather than to wait on the Lord. As a result, we may find ourselves faced with severe consequences for foolishly rushing into our plans.

Through Pastor’s morning messages, we are deeply challenged to wait on the Lord. It is wiser to wait when answers are not given…when our adverse circumstances do not seem to change. Let us learn not to fret but to trust in the Lord. Let us be challenged to be wise by waiting on the Lord.

Elements of waiting on the Lord

These elements of waiting on the Lord reveal to us the wisdom of waiting.

1. Waiting for the plan of God

“Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for Him;” (Psalm 37:7)

a. There is a distinction between waiting for and waiting on the Lord.

b. Waiting for God has to do with the plans of God.

c. God revealed to David His plans for him to become king (1 Samuel 16:13). When David was faced with two opportunities to kill Saul, he restrained himself (1 Samuel 24,26). He was not going to take matters into his own hands to expedite the start of his reign as king. David wisely chose to let Saul go and to wait on the Lord instead.

d. God’s plans are good, wise and greatly blessed.

e. Wiser to rest in the Lord and His plans rather than to rush into our own plans.

f. David sought to wait patiently for the Lord’s plan of making him king to be fulfilled.

Let us be wise in waiting for the Lord and His plans.

2. The spirit of waiting

“But those who wait on the LORD, they shall inherit the earth.” (Psalm 37:9)

a. The challenge of waiting on the Lord has to do with our spirit.

b. Our spirit should be patient, calm and collected.

c. Abraham had a spirit that was able to wait on the Lord. When there was strife between the herdsmen of Abraham and Lot concerning their livestock, Abraham told him that it was wiser for them to go their separate ways and that he could choose whichever land he wanted (Genesis 13). Lot chose the fertile plains of Jordan which God subsequently destroyed (Genesis 19).

d. Abraham chose wisely to remain in Canaan, which was the promised land…his inheritance.

e. He had the spirit to wait on the Lord…to provide for him and his family in time.

Let us be wise to cultivate a spirit that is able to wait on the Lord.

3. Waiting and keeping the righteous ways of God

“Wait on the LORD, and keep His way,” (Psalm 37:34)

As we wait on the Lord, how should we live our lives?

a. The challenge is to continue to keep the righteous ways of God.

b. Waiting on the Lord and keeping His ways are meant to go together.

c. We should not resort to ways that are evil or the ways of the world.

d. Let us be wise to wait on the Lord and keep practising righteousness as a way of life so that we may be exalted and blessed by Him.

Let us be challenged to be truly wise by waiting on the Lord.
