A new appreciation of the Lord’s Word

As we begin the year, let us personally appreciate the Word of God anew. It is not just mere words to us, but it is alive, true and wise. We can trust in the Lord’s Word for all that it is. What is it that we want to appreciate about God’s Word?

  1. Real…The Word of God is not false but is true and genuine.
  2. Relevant…The Lord’s Word is not abstract and inapplicable but is relevant to us for all of our needs.
  3. Reliable…Scripture is not unreliable but is trustworthy and fully dependable.
  4. Reassuring…The Word of God gives special comfort to us and can reassure us when we are faced with adverse circumstances of life.

Let us appreciate how the Word can help us face the fears of our lives.

In times of fear

The problem of fear can grip us at any time, especially when we least expect it. But we thank God that we do not need to let fear get the better of us. The Psalmist David wrote about facing his fears, “Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You.” (Psalm 56:3) They are indeed reassuring words to dwell on.

  1. In times of fear, we should not let our emotions overwhelm us.
  2. The focus of our trust is not on ourselves but on God.
  3. In trusting the Lord, we can overcome all our fears (Psalm 56:4).
  4. With God on our side, there is nothing or no one that we need to fear.

Trusting in the Lord’s Word

One way that we can learn to trust the Lord is to rely on His Word. The Word of God can help us deal with our fears and anxieties.

Recently, I had a nightmare and it woke me up in the middle of the night. The nightmare caused me to fear and it prevented me from going back to sleep. Then I told myself not to fret. The words of Psalm 31:15 came to mind, “My times are in Your hand.” There was nothing I should be afraid of and the reassuring words that our times are in the Lord’s safe hands brought relief. There came a greater sense of peace as I trusted the Lord and I was able to go back to sleep. I thank God for the reality and relevance of His Word in facing our fears.

Praising God for His Word

“In God (I will praise His Word)” (Psalm 56:4)

In appreciating and experiencing the reality of the Lord’s Word, I echo the words of David, “I will praise His Word.” His Word is reliable and trustworthy. Let us praise God for His true Word. Let us be challenged to fully trust the Lord and His Word in overcoming our fears.
