The challenge to pray

Prayer is a vital part of our Christian life and growth. It makes all the difference in how we face the difficulties of life and ministry. Prayer helps us to go beyond ourselves and to seek the Lord’s help. We turn to our heavenly Father for His grace and mercy to support us in our time of need. But we recognise that prayer is never easy to cultivate. It does require us to set aside time to relate to and pray to our heavenly Father. This is how we want to live a better life…to walk worthy of the Lord.

The Apostle Paul gave thanks to God for the faith and love of the Colossian church. But he also specially prayed for them to go on to the next level. What lessons do we want to learn from Paul’s prayer for the Colossian church?

Vital lessons

1. Heaven-bound hope

“Because of the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, of which you heard before

in the word of the truth of the gospel,” (Colossians 1:5)

  1. Our hope should not be one that is earth-bound.
  2. Our faith should give us hope that goes beyond our jobs and wealth.
  3. It is a hope laid up for us in heaven…a heaven-bound hope.
  4. This hope will never disappoint us in any way (Romans 5:5).
  5. The love of God will be poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit (Romans 5:5).
  6. Let us be challenged to cultivate this heaven-bound hope as we pray.

2. Non-stop praying

“For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you,” (Colossians 1:9)

  1. Paul set the example by offering ceaseless prayers.
  2. It is not just about praying for the moment.
  3. Our challenge is to maintain consistent prayer as we intercede for the needs of others.

3. Praying for greater understanding

“And to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;” (Colossians 1:9)

  1. Paul prayed for the brethren to have the knowledge of His will…something most vital.
  2. He also prayed for wisdom to discern things well.
  3. There was a need for spiritual understanding to gain deeper insight and enlightenment…to make good decisions.

4. Walking worthy of the Lord

“That you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every

good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;” (Colossians 1:10)

  1. A goal of our prayer is to be able to walk worthy of the Lord.
  2. We are given the wisdom to fully please the Lord and to be fruitful in our work for Him.
  3. Our lives would reflect a love for the Lord above all else in this world.

5. Patience, longsuffering with joy

“For all patience and longsuffering with joy;” (Colossians 1:11)

The end of our prayer is that our lives would reflect patience, long-suffering and joy. No matter what difficulties we may face, we can pray and overcome them with greater strength…to persevere, to be patient and to be joyful always. Let us be challenged to apply these vital lessons to our prayer life as we live and serve the Lord.
