Taking time to pray
God has given us the great privilege of being able to pray to Him. We can come to Him in prayer at any time…anywhere. But the problem with many of us is that we have taken this privilege for granted. We find ourselves too busy with work, with family responsibilities and many other things that we fill our lives with and we do not spend time with God as we ought to. As a result, we do not seek Him as we should and we miss out on so much.
The Lord Jesus sets for us a great example of what it means to give time to His Father and to commune with Him. The Lord Jesus had attained great knowledge, understanding and wisdom over the years. There was no one who came close to His discernment of God’s plan and truth. Yet, the Lord did not assume anything but sought His Heavenly Father regularly to seek His guidance.
Giving time no matter what
- We recognise that it is indeed a struggle to find the time to be with God in prayer.
- But we tend to give in to our excuses and procrastination.
- We may desire to want to spend time, but there does not seem to be time to do so.
- Before we know it, time has passed us by…half the year is gone.
- The Lord Jesus always sought to make time no matter what.
- Even when He was busy with ministry, He would not allow a day to go by without being in the presence of His Father.
Praying in the morning
“Now in the morning, having risen a long while before daylight, He went out and departed to a solitary place; and there He prayed.” (Mark 1:35)
- The Lord Jesus found time in the early mornings…a long time before daylight.
- He loved being alone with His Father, praying to Him and being in communion with Him.
- There was never a day in which He allowed excuses and tiredness to miss His time with His Father.
- The Lord Jesus was very busy with ministry as recorded in Mark 1.
- He spent time calling His disciples, casting our unclean spirits, healing the multitudes who came to Him and fulfilling His great purpose of preaching the gospel.
- He always sought to prepare Himself for these vital ministries by being with His Father.
- Let us make time each morning to be with our Heavenly Father as a non-negotiable.
Praying in the evening
“And when He had sent the multitudes away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. Now when evening came, He was alone there.” (Matthew 14:23)
After a long day, the Lord Jesus would always look forward to spend time with His Father. He would usually go up a mountain to be alone with His Father to pray. There were many concerns in ministry to pray over. He needed to bring these concerns to His Father. When there was a need for crucial decisions to be made, like selecting His disciples to be His apostles, we read, “Now it came to pass in those days that He went out to the mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God” (Luke 6:12). This was a decision of vital importance. God gave Him the discernment to make His decision to select His apostles. As God revealed and confirmed things for Him, the Lord called 12 apostles to be trained and to minister by His side. Let us be challenged to give time to commune with the Father that we may understand how we may minister as the Lord Jesus did and to have the discernment to make wise decisions in life and in ministry.
