The Lord’s gift of our inheritance

As children of God, we are privileged to have received a special inheritance from Him. It was graciously given to us when we came to know the Lord Jesus. Paul wrote about the Lord’s gift of inheritance to the Ephesian church…

In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, (Ephesians 1:11)

You were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory. (Ephesians 1:13–14)

How should we understand the concept of our inheritance?

The concept of our inheritance

1. Understand what the Lord’s inheritance is

  1. Related to “chosen”…God has chosen for us an inheritance.
  2. It was specially allotted to us.

2. Characteristics of this inheritance

  1. Spiritual
  2. Heavenly
  3. Eternal

3. Features of this inheritance

  1. A home in heaven
  2. Full salvation that we will experience in heaven
  3. Being joint heirs with Christ
  4. Our soul spending eternity with God

These are some of the things that make up what our inheritance is.

The problem of not appreciating our rich inheritance

  1. God has given us a rich inheritance in Christ.
  2. But the problem is that few really appreciate this inheritance.
  3. Many tend to focus far more on earthly things like wealth.
  4. Paul saw this problem of being earthly minded in the Ephesian church.
  5. The church was not growing as spiritually minded as it should have been.
  6. As we have the same problem of being earthly minded, let us seek to address it so that we may truly appreciate the riches of our heavenly inheritance.

Apply this concept of inheritance to our lives

How do we apply this concept of our inheritance as a part of our life? The challenge is for us to be far more spiritually minded than earthly minded. This is one of the reasons why Paul wrote so extensively about spiritual things in Ephesians 1. He wrote, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ.” (Ephesians 1:3) Thus, he had to take much pain to elaborate on the blessings God had poured out. The focus was to help the brethren cultivate a more spiritual mindset. Ephesians 1 is not just meant to be a list of blessings but also to help the church appreciate things spiritual and eternal.

Let this be our challenge too. Let us cultivate a mindset that is not caught up with the physical and temporary things of this world but focuses on the spiritual and eternal things of our inheritance in heaven.
