The greatness of God

One of the fascinating attributes of God is His greatness. The Psalmist David wrote, “Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised.” (Psalm 145:3) What does “greatness” mean? It is a reference to quality rather than quantity. The quality of greatness is seen in God. A word that is associated with “greatness” is the word “awesome”. God is so great that He instils awe in those who come before His presence. He is awesome in His greatness. The greatness of God also reveals that no one is as great as He is. His greatness is unparalleled.

The profundity of God’s greatness

  1. Can we fully understand the greatness of God?
  2. The answer is a definite “No!”
  3. David wrote, “And His greatness is unsearchable.” (Psalm 145:3)
  4. The greatness of God is truly profound.
    1. It is incomprehensible.
    2. It is beyond understanding.
    3. It is past finding out.
  5. There is no way in which we have a complete understanding of God’s greatness.
  6. We stand in awe of the profundity of God’s greatness.

The greatness of God displayed

There are different ways in which God displays His greatness.

1. The great Person of God

We see God’s greatness in who He is.

  1. He is great as He is God (Psalm 145:1). As God, He is divine and all-powerful. By nature of who He is, the Lord is our great God.
  2. He is great as our sovereign King (Psalm 145:1). God is the greatest King of all. His sovereignty is unmatched.
  3. He is great as He has a great name (Psalm 145:1). His name represents the Person of God. He has the greatest name of all.

Let us appreciate the greatness of God in all that He is.

2. The great works of God

The works of God also display how great He is.

  1. His works are everlasting (Psalm 145:4). One generation to another will behold His works.
  2. His acts are declared to be mighty (Psalm 145:4). The works of God are done with great might and power. He does things that no one else can.
  3. His works reflect great glory (Psalm 145:5). Within the wondrous works of God, there is the glorious splendour of His majesty.
  4. His acts are seen as awesome. His works are so great that we are awed by them and stand in wonder at them.

Let us stand in awe of the greatness of God that we see in His works.

Extolling the Lord

“I will extol You, my God, O King; and I will bless Your name forever and ever.” (Psalm 145:1)

Let us be challenged to respond appropriately to the profound greatness of God. Let us be challenged to extol Him and bless His great name always.
