"Behold, He is coming with clouds"

Text: Revelation 1:7

THE RETURN OF THE LORD JESUS

The Lord Jesus taught His Disciples about His Return (Matthew 24-25). This field of study is called “Eschatology”. It is a study of “the end times”. The Return of the Lord Jesus would not be the same as when He was born. John describes the Lord’s return poignantly.

“Behold, He is coming with clouds,
and every eye will see Him,
even they who pierced Him.
And all the tribes of the earth
will mourn because of Him.
Even so, Amen.”
Revelation 1:7

1. The Lord’s 2nd Coming.

a) He would come “with clouds”.

b) This is better understood if we refer to what Matthew wrote in his Gospel.

“Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven,
and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn,
and they will see the Son of Man
coming on the clouds of heaven
with power and great glory.
And He will send His angels
with a great sound of a trumpet,
and they will gather together
His elect from the four winds,
from one end of heaven to the other.”
Matthew 24:30-31

i) The Lord would return coming on the clouds of heaven.

ii) His return would be emphatically full of “power and great glory”.

2. And every eye shall see Him.

a) This could be literal sight

b) It could also mean “understanding”.

c) All would then see and understand that the Son of Man is indeed the Christ.

d) Even those who had caused Him to be crucified.

3. All the tribes of the earth.

a) This is a reference to the inhabitants of the earth.

b) Many have rejected the Lord Jesus for their own reasons.

c) They would realise, too late, that the Lord Jesus is indeed the One whom God has appointed to be the King of kings and Lord of lords.

d) There would be great sorrow when the Lord Jesus returns to earth with majesty and power.

4. John added a personal response here.

a) He was deeply moved by this word of revelation.

b) From the depth of his heart, he murmured his acceptance and appreciation.

c) He whispered his concurrence at the thought of the Return of the Saviour.

i) There should be great joy in the heart when one ponders the 2nd Coming.

ii) There should be a great sense of jubilation as we await the Lord’s Return.
