Day 353 – Psalm 72

“He shall have dominion also from sea to sea…” Psalm 72:8a

AN EVEN STRONGER HINT OF THE MESSIANIC KINGDOM

The following text hints at a kingdom that would be far more extensive and far greater than that of King Solomon.

“He shall have dominion also from sea to sea,
And from the River to the ends of the earth.”
Psalm 72:8

1. The limited kingdom of King Solomon

a) His reign would be essentially limited to the land of Canaan.
b) God’s promise to Abraham was Canaan.
c) Its geographical dimensions are well specified (Genesis 15:18-21).

2. “He shall have dominion from sea to sea”

a) Canaan had been promised to Abraham and his descendants.
b) Joshua led Israel to occupy the land.
c) However, no king could be described as having dominion over the land.
d) The earlier kings:-
i) Saul did not have dominion over the land.
ii) David had to fight often just to survive.
e) Nevertheless this was a great promise to ponder over- Dominion!

3. “And from the River to the ends of the earth”

a) This was a reference to the River Euphrates.
b) To the ends of the earth.
i) Solomon did not have dominion over the ends of the earth.
ii) Only the Messiah-King would one day exercise this dominion.
iii) This was a prophetic-Messianic reference- awaiting fulfilment!
