Day 352 – Psalm 72

“In His days the righteous shall flourish…” Psalm 72:7a

A GENTLE MESSIANIC REFERENCE

The concept of a king in the Old Testament is often tied to three elements:-

1. The human king (in this instance, Solomon).

2. The LORD (He is the Great and Ultimate King).

3. The Messiah- as King.

A GLIMPSE OF THE MESSIANIC KINGDOM

Psalm 72 may be understood as a reference to the kingdom of Solomon. Yet, the language of the psalm goes way beyond the reign of Solomon.

“In His days the righteous shall flourish,
And abundance of peace,
Until the moon is no more.”
Psalm 72:7

1. “In His days”

a) This cannot refer to the LORD (He cannot be described in this manner).
b) This could be a reference to the reign of king Solomon.
c) There is a veiled reference to the future Messianic reign of Jesus.

2. “The righteous shall flourish”

a) The righteous will always thrive when a good and just king reigns.
b) Only when the nation has an evil king would the righteous suffer anguish.

3. “Abundance of peace”

a) This is God’s blessing of a nation that chooses the path of righteousness.
b) Peace in abundance is something never to be taken for granted.

4. “Until the moon is no more”

a) This is a reference to longevity… a reference to eternity.
b) This reference applies to the eternal reign of the Messiah-King.
