Day 354 – Psalm 72

“Those who dwell in the wilderness will bow before Him…” Psalm 72:9a

THE EXTENT OF THE MESSIANIC KINGDOM

That Psalm 72 has Messianic elements becomes even more obvious if we look at the text below.

“Those who dwell in the wilderness will bow before Him,
And His enemies will lick the dust.”
Psalm 72:9

1. There is no Biblical-historical evidence of wars waged by Solomon.

a) David’s reign was characterised by war.
b) Solomon’s reign stood in stark contrast- “Peace” was the order of the day.

2. “Those who dwell in the wilderness will bow before Him”

a) This is a description of enemies who dwell in the wilderness.
b) The idea of bowing before the King is one of submission- often because of being defeated in war.
c) Solomon waged no wars at all.
d) The Messiah-King will have many enemies (Psalm 2).
e) God Himself will quell all enemies.

3. “And His enemies will lick the dust”

a) Psalm 2 is another Messianic Psalm.
b) This prophetic psalm describes many nations resisting God’s rule.
c) They imagine that they can overcome God and His decrees.
d) They find that they will be defeated and will “lick the dust” in shame.
e) Psalm 72 and Psalm 2 are therefore related theologically.

YOUR KINGDOM COME

Let us pray for the day when the Messiah-King will return to rule on earth. In that day, this prophetic utterance would be fulfilled completely. Let us never lose sight of the fact that Jesus is the Lord of lords, and the King of kings.
