“He shall come down like rain…” Psalm 72:6a

GOD AND THE KING

Solomon recognised a very strong relationship between God and the king. On the one hand, it is God who must bless the nation. On the other hand, God would employ the king as His servant, His royal emissary to rule on His behalf.

“He shall come down like rain upon the grass before mowing,
Like showers that water the earth.”
Psalm 72:6

1. The figure of rain and showers

a) Water, then and now, is a precious commodity.
b) Rain and showers are described as the primary source of water.

2. “He shall come down like rain upon the grass before mowing”

a) Rain in an agrarian society like ancient Israel was deeply appreciated.
b) Rain was needed for the grains to grow.
c) The timing of the rains was also very important.
d) Rain before mowing of the grass would be ideal.

3. “Like showers that water the earth”

a) Showers rather than storms are in mind.
b) Showers are welcome things.
c) They water the thirsty earth.

GOD AND GOD ALONE

God alone can bring such blessings on a nation! What kind of a nation would receive such blessings from above? Let us ponder the following thoughts.

1. A righteous nation.

2. A just nation.

3. A nation that would fear God.
