“By You I have been upheld from birth…” Psalm 71:6a

THE CULTIVATION OF TRUST

A deep trust in God spans many years. And if careful attention is paid to cultivating trust in God, a strong and buoyant spirit could result.

“By You I have been upheld from birth;
You are He who took me out of my mother’s womb.
My praise shall be continually of You.”
Psalm 71:6

1. “By You I have been upheld from birth”

a) This is essentially a reflective statement.
b) The author would not have any actual recollections of his birth.
c) However he could have been informed about how the Lord had upheld him.
i) Moses was upheld and saved from death (Exodus 2:1-10).
ii) Jesus was upheld in similar circumstances (Matthew 2:13-18).

2. “You are He who took me out of my mother’s womb”

a) Midwives usually attended births.
b) There were no obstetric gynecologists in the early days.
c) Complications resulting in death were not uncommon.
d) Every safe delivery was cause for rejoicing.
e) God’s hand of protection was felt most consciously.

3. “My praise shall be continually of You”

a) This praise was born out of grateful reflection of God’s hand of protection.
b) This praise reflects a strong and buoyant spirit.
i) It stems from a genuine trust in God.
ii) This trust was cultivated from childhood to youth.
