Day 324 – Psalm 71

“For You are my hope, O Lord GOD…” Psalm 71:5a

TRUST AND HOPE

Trust in God has many elements. One of the most significant elements has to do with the concept of hope. Trust and Hope are virtually inseparable.

“For You are my hope, O Lord GOD;
You are my trust from my youth.”
Psalm 71:5

1. What is hope?

a) It is the substance of expectation.
i) Deliverance from God (Psalm 71:2a).
ii) Escape from the traps of enemies (Psalm71:2b).
b) It is the substance of faith.
i) That God would hear and answer.
ii) That God would honour His covenant relationship with His people.

2. “You are my hope, O Lord GOD”

a) The Lord GOD Himself is the sum-total of Hope.
b) The answers from God stem from the hope established in Him.
c) There is firm trust in the Lord expressed.
i) Even if the answers to prayer have not been received.
ii) Even if the heart is struggling with some feelings of anxiety.

3. “You are my trust from my youth”

We have a good glimpse of the faith of the author in this text.

a) He had known the Lord at a young age.
b) He had learned to exercise trust even when he was but a youth.
c) This cultivated trust in the Lord was holding him up in his trials.

His years of learning to trust in God were standing him in good stead.
