Day 326 – Psalm 71

“But You are my strong refuge.” Psalm 71:7b

HOW DO PEOPLE VIEW US?

How do we see ourselves when we go through trials and difficulties? For that matter, how do other people see us when we go through difficult times?

“I have become as a wonder to many,
But You are my strong refuge.”
Psalm 71:7

1. “I have become as a wonder to many”

a) This phrase is probably a hint at how the psalmist felt.
b) The psalmist may have had received derisive remarks from enemies.
c) They probably mocked him severely.

2. An example of one who suffered terribly in his ministry was the prophet Jeremiah.

Let us ponder some of his remarks:-

a) “I am in derision daily” (Jeremiah 20:7c).
b) “Everyone mocks me” (Jeremiah 20:7d).
c) “All my acquaintances watched for my stumbling” (Jeremiah 20:10c).

3. Suffering can have a terrible effect on the sufferer

We consider how Jeremiah was adversely affected because of his suffering. In anguish he uttered the following words:-

a) “Cursed be the day in which I was born” (Jeremiah 20:14a).
b) “Why did I come forth from the womb to see labour and sorrow, that my days should be consumed with shame?” (Jeremiah 20:18).

4. “But You are my strong refuge”

a) It takes great trust in God not to be adversely affected by suffering.
b) It pays to make sure that God is indeed our strong refuge.
c) It was wise of the psalmist to turn to God continually (Psalm 71:3).
d) Few things in life are as important as a genuine and deep trust in God.
