Day 250 – Psalm 64

“Who sharpen their tongue like a sword…” Psalm 64:3a

PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE

War may be waged on many fronts. Even in the early days, psychological warfare was waged. It must have been even more terrifying in the days of David to have to fight a war where the main weapon is “the tongue”.

“Who sharpen their tongue like a sword,
And bend their bows to shoot their arrows- bitter words,br />
That they may shoot in secret at the blameless;
Suddenly they shoot at him and do not fear.”
Psalm 64:3-4

1. Their tongue like a sword

a) In ordinary battles the main weapons were:-
i) The sword
ii) Arrows
b) In this battle the weapons were:-
i) The tongue (sword)
ii) Bitter words (arrows)

2. The victims

a) The blameless
b) These are unprepared for the battles waged by the wicked.

3. Attacks launched

a) These were launched with very sharp words.
b) These were launched with no fear of God in their hearts.

HOW DOES ONE FIGHT A WAR OF WORDS?

There were no war manuals that David could consult to arm himself against such psychological attacks. David’s best defence was to fall back on the Lord in prayer.

1. Engaging the enemy with a counter attack full of words would be futile.

2. Praying to the Lord and lodging a complaint against the wiles of the wicked would be a far better option.
