Day 184 – Psalm 57

“My soul is bowed down…” Psalm 57:6

STRONG EMOTIONAL STRUGGLES

To trust involves deep emotions. Struggles must be expected. On the one hand there may be feelings of confidence, but on the other hand, there may be moments of anxiety. Such emotional turmoils must be anticipated!

“They have prepared a net for my steps;
My soul is bowed down;
They have dug a pit before me;
Into the midst of it they themselves have fallen.”
Psalm 57:6

1. Things that brought an acute sense of anxiety

a) Enemies had prepared a net in an attempt to capture David.
i) Imagery of a hunter searching for prey.
ii) The use of nets to hunt animals was a common practice.
b) Enemy hunters did not stop at using one method.
i) Imagery of big-game hunters is in view.
ii) These hunters dug deep pits to trap much large animals.
iii) Well-dug pits were cleverly disguised and were often deadly.

2. Anxiety was felt

a) It was natural to fear.
b) David felt despondent.
c) He felt that his very soul was “bowed down”.

3. Refusing to give up hope

David refused to yield to feelings of anxiety. He drew encouragement from this thought.
The enemies may imagine that they would cause David to be trapped (by their nets or their pits), but they had not reckoned with the fact that they too could fall into the very pits they had dug!
