THE ACQUISITION OF WISDOM

What is “wisdom”? How may we distinguish “wisdom” from “knowledge”?

“My mouth shall speak wisdom,
And the meditation of my heart shall give understanding.”
Psalm 49:3

1. Features of knowledge

a) Knowledge is made up of data.
b) The data may be gathered in various ways:-
i) Reading of books
ii) Observation of life
iii) Recording of events

2. Features of wisdom

a) It goes beyond mere memory of data.
b) Insight is gained.
c) Understanding is acquired.

3. Articulation of wisdom

a) It must be articulated verbally (Reference to the mouth speaking wisdom).
b) It must be recognized by others as words of wisdom.

4. Depth to be found in true wisdom

a) Wisdom does not exhaust itself in its articulation.
b) It beckons the heart to meditate further so that even greater understanding may result.
