ESSENTIAL FEATURES OF WISDOM

For wisdom to merit its title must have the following essential features:

1. It must have Universal appeal.

2. It must have Universal application.

3. The word “universal” is used in contrast to:-

a) Local or parochial usage
b) Subjective personal application

THE CRY OF THE WISE

The opening lines of Psalm 49 match the features characteristic of wisdom-literature writing.

“Hear this, all peoples;
Give ear, all inhabitants of the world.
Both low and high, rich and poor together.”
Psalm 49:1-2

1. Wisdom is meant for all

a) The lowly
b) The high
i) The high-born
ii) Those that attain great stature
c) The rich
d) The poor

2. Give ear

Wisdom may be imparted by the wise. However, it is important that appropriate response must be made by all. It begins with the seeker of wisdom to “hear” and to “give ear”. Without effort made by the seeker, wisdom would never be attained (Proverbs 2:1-9).
