Day 80 – Psalm 49

“I will incline my ear to a proverb…” Psalm 49:4a

AN EXCELLENT APPROACH TAKEN

Few teachers adopt this approach taken by the sons of Korah. It is a wonderfully commendable approach that speaks well of them as seekers of wisdom.

“I will incline my ear to a proverb;
I will disclose my dark saying on the harp.”
Psalm 49:4

1. “I will incline my ear to a proverb”

a) The psalmist has every right to think of himself as a teacher of wisdom literature.
b) However he sees himself as a learner.
c) He is deeply committed to learning:-
i) Even as he teaches he learns.
ii) Even as he articulates his thoughts he meditates further.
iii) He is committed to obtaining further and deeper understanding.
iv) He recognizes that he must always be an ardent student.
v) He seeks to understand the writings of other proverbial sayings in the hope that he would obtain further wisdom.

2. “I will disclose my dark saying on the harp”

a) Deep thoughts are never easily comprehended.
b) They are sometimes called “dark sayings” (meaning: “obscure”).
c) The finder of wisdom must be committed to disclosing or sharing what he has discovered.
d) The sons of Korah had an advantage… they were proficient in music.
e) They expressed a commitment to help people learn through composing songs (accompanied by the harp, for example).
