Day 333 – Psalm 40

“It is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins.” Hebrews 10:4

THE LIMITATIONS OF THE OLD SACRIFICIAL SYSTEM

The author of Hebrews made an astute comment about the old sacrificial system in the following statement.

“For then would they not have ceased to be offered?
For the worshippers, once purified, would have had
no more consciousness of sins.
But in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year.
For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats
could take away sins.”
Hebrews 10:2-4

1. “For then would they not have ceased to be offered?”

a) The old sacrificial system had not been sufficient.
b) If it had been perfect there would not be the need to make repeated sacrifice.

2. “Purified… no more consciousness of sins”

a) The worshippers would have stood purified after offering a sacrifice.
b) They would have had no more consciousness of sins.

3. “A reminder of sins every year”

a) The sacrifices serve more as a reminder.
b) The reminder of sin was most obvious in old sacrificial system.

4. “It is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins”

a) This is a logical conclusion.
b) It is also an obvious and correct theological conclusion.

A NEW AND BETTER SYSTEM HAD TO BE OFFERED

The Lord God always had in mind a better system. That system would be introduced by the Lord Jesus Christ when He came into the world. He would not come and offer sacrifices and offerings! (The Gospels do not record that Jesus went to the Temple to offer any kind of sacrifices. He would go to the temple and teach God’s word).

The Lord Jesus had come to do something very special! By His life and by His death He would bring about a new and better way of approaching God in worship!
