Day 332 – Psalm 40

“A shadow of the good things to come…” Hebrews 10:1a

A SHORT STUDY OF PSALM 40 AND HEBREWS 10

Psalm 40:6-10 would not be fully understood and appreciated without studying Hebrews 10:1-14.

BURNT OFFERING AND SIN OFFERING YOU DID NOT REQUIRE

The sacrificial system was indeed given by God Himself to Israel. The following text teaches us how we ought to comprehend the old covenant system of worship.

“For the law, having a shadow of the good things to come,
and not the very image of the things, can never with these
same sacrifices, which they offer continually year by year,
make those who approach perfect.”
Hebrews 10:1

1. The law of burnt offering and sin offering

a) It was law.
b) However it was only a shadow of the good things to come.
c) It was only an “image”.

2. What the law demanded

a) That these offerings must be offered continually.
b) Year after interminable year these sacrifices must be made.
c) These sacrifices taught the worshippers many valuable lessons
i) About the holiness of God.
ii) About the wretched state of sinful man.
iii) About the need to stand righteous before the Lord.

3. What the law could not do

a) It could not bring about “perfection”.
b) It could not offer righteousness to man.
c) It would take the Messiah Himself to offer the perfect sacrifice of Himself!
