PROPHECY IN THE PSALMS

Once again we come across a profound prophetic statement in the psalms.

“Then I said, ‘Behold, I come;
In the scroll of the book it is written of me.
I delight to do Your will, O my God,
And Your law is within my heart.’ ”
Psalm 40:7-8

1. “Then I said, ‘Behold, I come’ “

a) This could not be David for he had already come into existence.
b) It has to be a reference to another person in the future.

2. “In the scroll of the book it is written of me”

a) The Scriptures certainly prophesied much about the coming of the Messiah.
b) This particularly represents the Messiah’s knowledge of the Scriptures.

3. “I delight to do Your will, O my God”

a) The Messiah was aware of the will of God for Him.
b) He would not be coming to make “sacrifices and offerings”.
c) He would be coming for the sole purpose of doing God’s will.
d) He must be able to speak of delighting to do God’s will.

4. “And Your law is within my heart”

a) The Messiah’s task was wrapped around the Law of God.
i) He must first know it well.
ii) He must diligently fulfill God’s will.
b) The challenge then would be to hide God’s law within His heart.
c) He must be able to joyously declare that God’s law was truly within his heart.
