Day 328 – Psalm 40

“Sacrifice and offering You did not desire…” Psalm 40:6a

THE SACRIFICIAL SYSTEM

It was God who gave instructions to Moses as to how Israel was to worship Him. That system included making sacrifices and bringing offerings to God.

MISUNDERSTANDING OF THE SACRIFICIAL SYSTEM

Israel never fully comprehended the full significance of the elaborate worship system that God gave. There were rich symbolic truths that were to be found in the elements of worship. Sadly, Israel reduced everything to mere religious rituals. (In time to come the prophets of God would proclaim that mere ritualistic worship forms were rejected by the Lord {Isaiah 1:10-15}).

A PROFOUND NEW THOUGHT

The following text may almost be seen as a radical theological statement.

“Sacrifice and offering You did not desire;
My ears You have opened.
Burnt offering and sin offering You did not require.”
Psalm 40:6

1. “You did not desire”

a) Sacrifice
b) Offering

2. “You did not require”

a) Burnt offering
b) Sin offering

3. “My ears You have opened”

a) This was a new teaching that God was personally giving.
i) This new thought is one of the many wonderful thoughts of God.
ii) It was a new truth that God was revealing to David.
b) God would have to personally “open the ears of David”.
c) This was a new prophetic word God gave that would see its fulfillment in none other than the Lord Jesus Christ Himself (Hebrews 10:5-10).
