Day 298 – Psalm 37

“I have not seen the righteous forsaken…” Psalm 37:25

AN UPLIFTING TESTIMONY

David, the author now adds a personal testimony, to his observations about the righteous.

“I have been young, and now am old;
Yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken,
Nor his descendants begging bread.
He is ever merciful, and lends;
And his descendants are blessed.”
Psalm 37:25-26

1. “I have been young, and now am old”

a) This testimony is made by aged David.
b) It is a testimony that had deep roots.
c) His testimony must have spanned many years (from youth to old age).

2. “The righteous”

a) He is especially characterized by “mercy”.
b) This “mercifulness” is expressed by the way he “lends”.
i) He will lend money to those who come to him in their hour of need.
ii) All that he has loaned out may not be repaid fully.
iii) Nevertheless he will continue to lend to those in need.
c) This text does not suggest that he does not give to charitable causes or to God.
d) It tells us that he does more than the giving of his tithes.

3. “I have not seen the righteous forsaken”

a) The righteous would never be forsaken by the Lord.
b) God would be there to uphold him.

4. “His descendants are blessed”

Indeed they are blessed. The blessing of the Lord will come upon the descendants of the righteous. They would never need to beg for a living!
