Day 23 – Psalm 3

“I lay down and slept…” Psalm 3:5

PROBLEMS CAN ROB US OF NEEDED REST

There is no question about the fact that troubles in life can cause insomnia! Many things could have robbed David of much-needed sleep (rest). Two may be highlighted:-

1. Fierce enemies

2. Fears within the heart

PRAYER CAN BRING ABOUT MUCH-NEEDED REST

Sleep is often taken for granted! David interestingly recorded how he felt when he had to flee from his enemies.

“I lay down and slept;
I awoke, for the LORD sustained me.”
Psalm 3:5

1. “I lay down and slept”

a) It would not be easy to find a safe place to lay the head.
b) Anybody could be a potential betrayer.
c) It would be difficult to fully trust anyone in times of war.
d) Surprisingly David found that he could fall asleep after praying to God.

2. “I awoke, for the LORD sustained me”

a) It seemed as if David had a normal night of rest… despite his desperate situation in life.
b) He awoke
i) Not overwhelmed by anxious fears.
ii) Feeling and appreciating the Presence of God with him.
c) The Lord’s sustenance
i) David knew that it was the Lord who had been sustaining him.
ii) His prayers to God as his LORD had been heard.
iii) God had protected him and had sustained him through the night.
