Day 365 – Psalm 149

“Praise the LORD! Sing to the LORD a new song…” Psalm 149:1a

THE THEME OF PRAISE

The theme of praise to God continues to be very strong and dominant in this psalm. This is as it should be. There is every reason why praise ought to be upon the lips of every believer. The psalmist focuses on why Israel should always be offering praise to God in worship.

1. Sing to the LORD a new song (Psalm 149:1)

a) The heart should be inspired to compose a new song to the Lord.
b) The Lord God deserves to be praised with the composition of new songs!

2. Reasons why new songs should be composed and sung in praise of God (Psalm 149:2-4)

a) Because the Lord is their Maker.
i) In general… as the Creator of life.
ii) Specifically… when He created Israel as a nation.
b) Because the Lord is the King of Israel.
c) Because He takes pleasure in His people.
d) Because He beautifies the humble with salvation (deliverance).

3. Expressions of praise to God (Psalm 149:3)

a) Through dance.
b) Through songs of praise.
c) Through having a spirit of joy.
d) Through singing high praises to God.

4. Special expressions of praise

a) Through upholding justice.
b) Through executing the will of God in war against the wicked and unrighteous.
c) This is a special honour according to the righteous saints of God.

The special expressions of praise are valid for they come from God. However they are difficult to execute.
