“Though I walk in the midst of trouble, You will revive me…” Psalm 138:7a
TROUBLES IN LIFE
King David did not write Psalm 138 amidst a life of ease. The following text reveals that he was facing troubles in the kingdom. This psalm is even more significant when we understand the context in which it was written.
“Though I walk in the midst of trouble, You will revive me;
You will stretch out Your hand against the wrath of my enemies,
And Your right hand will save me.
The LORD will perfect that which concerns me;
Your mercy, O LORD, endures forever;
Do not forsake the works of Your hands.”
Psalm 138:7-8
1. “Though I walk in the midst of trouble”
a) Trouble must be expected.
b) These may be called “trials” or “tribulations”.
2. Trust in God amidst troubles
a) He will revive the soul.
b) He will stretch out His hand against the wrath of enemies.
i) God will protect.
ii) God will preserve.
iii) God will save (“deliver”).
3. “The Lord will perfect that which concerns me”
a) What God has begun, He will also perfect (Philippians 1:6).
b) God’s mercy will prevail
i) Because it is abundant.
ii) Because it is graciously promised to His people.
4. A humble prayer
David concluded this psalm with a prayer that God would not forsake His servant. This was not uttered in doubt. This prayer simply suggests that David never took for granted the mercies of God.
