A SIMPLE SUPERSCRIPTION

We have a simple superscription for Psalm 108. It reads:

A Song. A Psalm of David.

1. This Psalm was written as a Song. This is a common feature.

2. The author is well known. David found time and delight in composing songs/psalms.

THE COMPOSITION OF PSALM 108

The content of Psalm 108 is quite similar to two previous psalms that David had written.

1. Psalm 108:1-5 is similar to Psalm 57:7-11.

2. Psalm 108:10-13 is similar to Psalm 60:9-12.

HOW SHOULD WE READ PSALM 108 THEN?

The superscription hints at how we may read Psalm 108.

1. Psalm 108 is a song.

a) Unfortunately we are not able to have the music edition of this psalm.
b) But we can understand how tunes are composed to fit songs.
i) The content may be similar.
ii) But this psalm would have been written to a different tune.

2. New significance to old content

a) Some contents may appear to be “old”.
b) They may even be recurrent.
c) But there is still great meaning when significance is properly factored in.
i) There could be a new sense of appreciation.
ii) A deeper love for God may be reflected.
iii) A stronger sense of faith in God may also be detected.
iv) A new and special inspiration could have caused “a new song” to be written.
