REMEMBERING GOD’S COVENANT

What a glorious day it must have been for Abraham to be given a covenant by God. The psalmist took time to remember that wondrous covenant Abraham received from God.

“The covenant which He made with Abraham,
And His oath to Isaac,
And confirmed it to Jacob for a statute,
To Israel as an everlasting covenant.”
Psalm 105:9-10

1. The three revered patriarchs mentioned

a) Abraham
b) Isaac
c) Jacob

2. The covenant as it was given was passed down intact

a) The original covenant was described as “made with Abraham”.
i) How gracious these words are.
ii) God in all His greatness gave a covenant to Abraham (a mere mortal).
b) The same covenant is now described as “His oath to Isaac”.
i) The content of the covenant had not changed.
ii) God confirmed with Isaac that He would honour the covenant given to Abraham.
iii) He assured Isaac of His commitment with “an oath”.
c) The Abrahamic covenant is now further confirmed with Jacob (Israel).
i) It is now described as “a statute”.
ii) It is gloriously described as “an everlasting covenant”.

MEDITATION ON THE COVENANT OF GOD

When the heart meditates on the covenant God gave to Abraham, it should give thanks to the Lord. The soul should break forth into singing psalms to Him. What a faithful God the Lord had proven Himself to be! Let us learn to glory in the Lord.
