“To you I will give the land of Canaan…” Psalm 105:11a

INTEGRAL CONTENT OF THE ABRAHAMIC COVENANT

There were many precious and powerful words God spoke to Abraham when He gave him the covenant. An integral part of the covenant was the promise of the land of Canaan.

“Saying, ‘To you I will give the land of Canaan
As the allotment of your inheritance.’
When they were few in number,
Indeed very few, and strangers in it.”
Psalm 105:11-12

1. “To you I will give the land of Canaan as the allotment of your inheritance”

a) This land was specifically described in Genesis 15:18-21.
b) The inhabitants of the land were also mentioned in the same text.
c) The land of Canaan would be Abraham’s by right of inheritance.

2. Displacement of the original inhabitants of Canaan

a) Why did God take out the original dwellers in the land?
b) Let us ponder the following texts:
i) The iniquity of the Amorites (Genesis 15:16)
These were wicked Marauders who raided and destroyed cities.
ii) The wickedness of these nations (Deuteronomy 9:5)
It was because of their wickedness that they were driven out of their land.
c) God had every right to displace the Canaanites.
d) He had given them hundreds of years to turn from their wicked ways but they did not.

3. “When they were few in number, indeed very few, and strangers in it”

a) This is an important thing to note as the context of the giving of the covenant is studied.
b) Just how few were the patriarchs when God promised them Canaan?
i) Abraham had only Isaac as son.
ii) Isaac had only Jacob as heir.
iii) Jacob had only twelve sons.
