Day 98 – Psalm 103

“Bless the LORD, O my soul…” Psalm 103:1a

SUPERSCRIPTION

“A Psalm of David.”

1. This is one of the simplest of superscriptions.

2. It simply identifies David as the author of this psalm.

BLESSING OF THE LORD

David began with a very clear and strong focus. He desired to bless the name of the Lord.

“Bless the LORD, O my soul;
And all that is within me, bless His holy name!
Bless the LORD, O my soul,
And forget not all His benefits.”
Psalm 103:1-2

1. Addressing the soul

a) David recognized that the human being is made up of two parts essentially.
i) The body (external)
ii) The soul (internal; sometimes also called “the spirit”)
b) The blessing of the Lord must be done at both levels.
i) The external, that is, the lips must bless the Lord.
ii) The internal, that is, the soul must also bless the Lord!

2. Blessing the Lord

a) The word “bless” includes a number of elements.
i) Gratitude
ii) Thanksgiving
iii) Joy
b) The soul cannot but bless the Lord with the deepest sense of appreciation.
c) The “benefits” from the Lord alone should cause the soul to respond with great love and gratitude.
