"Look to yourselves..."

Text: 2 John 8

THE DANGER OF LOSS OF SALVATION

We need never be afraid of losing our salvation in Christ Jesus, our Lord. May the following texts give us much confidence!

1. We may trust that our heavenly Father would keep His word when He promised eternal life (John 3:16).

2. We may trust that the Lord Jesus would indeed be able to keep those who are His (John 10:28-30).

3. We may trust that the Spirit of God is indeed our seal and our guarantee (Ephesians 1:13-14).

OTHER DANGERS

The Apostle John highlighted other dangers in the following text.

“Look to yourselves, that we do not lose those things we worked for,
but that we may receive a full reward.”
2 John 8

1. “We do not lose those things we worked for”

The following are things that we work hard at cultivating: –

a) Knowledge
b) Wisdom
c) Ministry skills
d) Confidence
e) Joy

2. Can we lose these things?

Yes!

a) We can lose knowledge and wisdom through disuse.
b) We can lose effectiveness in ministry.
c) The first can become last!
d) Doubts can replace confident faith and joy.

3. “But that we may receive a full reward”

a) This was the Lord’s promise to all who are found faithful.
b) We can lose our reward because we become unfaithful.

4. “Look to yourselves”

a) We may look to the Lord for grace and strength.
b) But we are still responsible for looking after ourselves.
c) Let us spare no effort to look after ourselves lest we fall from grace!
