"Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ..."

Text: 2 John 9

ABIDING IN THE LORD’S WORD

Once again the Apostle John highlights the need to abide in the Lord’s word. This is a word that we would do well to take heed of.

“Whoever transgresses and does not abide
in the doctrine of Christ does not have God.
He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son.”
2 John 9

1. “Whoever transgresses”

a) Literally the verb means: –
i) To go before.
ii) To go ahead of.
iii) To go too far.
b) The application
i) To transgress.
ii) To go beyond what the Lord has commanded.
c) It describes a person who keeps doing this

2. “And does not abide”

a) This is the opposite idea of the first clause.
b) The person who abides.
i) He is faithful to the Lord.
ii) He understands the significance of the teachings of Jesus.
iii) He remains faithful to the Lord’s word.

3. “Does not abide in the doctrines of Christ”

a) The teachings of Christ are priceless.
b) They are of eternal value.
c) Blessed is the one who remains faithful and abiding in the teachings of Jesus.

WHY DO SOME TRANSGRESS?

There are multiple reasons. The following are common problems: –

1. Some are carried away by false ideas/ false teachers.

2. Others are proud of their own thoughts and ideas.
