"For many deceivers have gone out into the world..."

Text: 2 John 7

THE DANGER OF DECEPTION

Once again, the Apostle John felt that he needed to raise up the danger of deception. This was an emphasis that could not be easily set aside.

“For many deceivers have gone out into the world
who do not confess Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh.
This is a deceiver and an antichrist.”
2 John 7

1. A needed warning

a) This was a topic John wrote about in his first epistle (1 John 2:18-23).
b) The elect lady must be given this word of warning too.

2. “Many deceivers have gone out into the world”

a) Deceivers are “many”.
b) They are not few in numbers.
c) They have gone out into the world.
i) They too will proclaim a message of love.
ii) But their kind of love is different.

3. “Who do not confess Jesus Christ”

a) These deceivers may preach the message of love.
b) But they will not proclaim the Lord Jesus Christ.

4. “As coming in the flesh”

a) They may proclaim the name of Jesus.
b) But theirs would be a truncated false Gospel message.
c) They miss out a crucial detail: That Christ came in the flesh.
i) He had to come in the flesh.
ii) He had to come in the flesh or He would not be able to provide atonement for our sins.
iii) To leave out this crucial detail is to preach “a different gospel”.

5. “This is a deceiver and an antichrist”

a) These are very strong words employed by the Apostle John.
b) Nevertheless, this truth needed to be uttered plainly and powerfully.
c) Deception must be exposed so that people would not be entrapped by false teachings.
