MINISTRY OF SACRED MUSIC
Asaph was one of the privileged Levites who was involved in the music ministry of the Tabernacle. The following text sheds important light on this ministry in the days of king David.
“Then David spoke to the leaders of the Levites
to appoint their brethren to be the singers accompanied
by instruments of music, stringed instruments, harps, and cymbals, by raising the voice with resounding joy.
So the Levites appointed Heman the son of Joel;
and of his brethren, Asaph the son of Berechiah…”
1 Chronicles 15: 16-17
“So he left Asaph and his brothers there before the ark of the covenant of the LORD to minister before the ark regularly,
as every day’s work required.”
1 Chronicles 16:37
SONGS IN THE NIGHT
Asaph was himself a songwriter. He had composed psalms to be sung for the congregation. These were hymns to be sung to the Lord. He must have possessed a wide repertoire of songs over the years.
