“I have considered the days of old…” Psalm 77:5a

THE BATTLE AGAINST DEPRESSIVE FEELINGS

Asaph refused to give in to his feeling of being overwhelmed! He determined that he would battle all the negative feelings that threatened to engulf him.

“I have considered the days of old,
The years of ancient times.”
Psalm 77:5

1. Falling back on his resources

a) Asaph was a trained Levite.
b) He was thus well schooled.
c) He fell back on all the resources he had.
i) He fell back on his knowledge of God.
ii) He fell back on his knowledge of the history of Israel.

2. “I have considered the days of old”

a) The idea behind the word “considered”.
i) Careful research
ii) Deep thought
b) “The days of old”
i) Essentially the history of Israel.
ii) Also his own personal experience of the history of Israel (though much briefer it was not in vain).

3. “The years of ancient times”

a) He felt that the answer to his problems lay in the lessons of ancient history.
b) Could there have been examples of people who had gone through similarly tough times?
c) Did they overcome their feelings of being overwhelmed?
d) Could their example help him as he faced problems?
