Day 38 – Psalm 74

“There is no longer any prophet…” Psalm 74:9b

GOD’S PROVISION

God gave to Israel many ministries that would help the nation walk righteously. Three groups may be highlighted:-

1. Kings

2. Priests

3. Prophets

But what if the kings decided to turn away from God and worship idols? What if the priests did not prove themselves faithful? What if the prophets had failed in their ministry?

A TERRIBLE BREAKDOWN

What was Judah like when King Nebuchadnezzar attacked the nation? The following text was a lament.

“We do not see our signs;
There is no longer any prophet;
Nor is there any among us who knows how long.”
Psalm 74:9

1. “We do not see our signs”

a) There were no special “signs” from God.

b) If there were, there were no seers who could help interpret these signs.

2. “There is no longer any prophet”

a) The prophet was a special servant of God.
b) He was given special words/messages from God.
c) But what if there were no prophets who bore a word from God?

3. “Nor is there any among us who knows how long”

a) There was a dearth of wise men/sages.
b) These could have offered some kind of encouragement.
c) There was a lack of wise people who could enlighten the nation as to how long they had to bear the shame and suffering inflicted on the nation by the Babylonians.
d) The land seemed bereft of any spiritual instruction or guidance.
